The combat system

Expedition 33's combat is a hybrid: turn-based selection with real-time execution. You pick your attacks from a menu, but when enemies attack you, you must time dodges and parries in real time. This means two separate skills matter — strategic planning and execution timing.

Parrying is always better than dodging. A successful parry negates damage entirely and often provides a counter-attack opportunity or buff. Dodging avoids damage but gives nothing back. Learn every enemy's parry timing.

Each character has different parry windows. Some characters have generous parry timing, others are tight. Learn which characters you're best at parrying with and keep them in your active party.

Attack timing bonuses exist. Some attacks have timed button press mechanics — hitting the right timing adds bonus damage or effects. Watch for the visual cue on each attack and practice the timing.

Party composition

Balance your party between damage types. Physical, magical, and elemental damage have different effectiveness against different enemies. Running three physical attackers leaves you stuck against armored enemies.

Support characters are not optional. Having at least one character with healing and buffing abilities transforms your survival. The game's difficulty assumes you're buffing and debuffing.

Experiment with every character. Each party member has unique abilities and a different parry rhythm. Characters you initially overlook might be essential for specific boss fights.

Exploration

Explore thoroughly before advancing the story. Lumière and the surrounding areas hide upgrade materials, equipment, side quests, and lore behind optional paths. Walking straight to the next objective skips significant content.

Environmental puzzles reward observation. Some areas have visual puzzles — elements in the environment that interact when you examine them. The game's art direction isn't just pretty — it's functional. Look at the world carefully.

Side quests connect to the main story. Unlike many RPGs where side content is disconnected filler, Expedition 33's optional quests provide context that enriches the main narrative.

Boss strategy

Learn the phase transitions. Most bosses have multiple phases with new attack patterns per phase. The first death to a boss is usually to a phase transition you didn't expect. Let the first attempt be for learning.

Debuffs are your best friend against bosses. Reducing enemy attack, defense, or speed often matters more than buffing your own party. Apply debuffs early and maintain them.

Parry windows change per boss phase. An attack you could parry in phase 1 might have different timing in phase 3. Stay alert.

Equipment and upgrades

Upgrade equipment regularly. The materials found through exploration directly improve your gear. Don't hoard materials "for later" — the upgrade you make now gets you through the current challenge.

Equipment affects parry timing and attack animations. Some weapons change your character's attack rhythm. When switching equipment, re-learn the timing in a regular encounter before challenging a boss.
