God of War Ragnarok Tips: Mastering Kratos in the Nine Realms

God of War Ragnarok tips — combat mechanics, armor priorities, Runic Attack choices, and the things the game doesn't tell you about its deeper systems.

God of War Ragnarok gives you two weapons from the start (Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos), a shield, a companion, and Spartan Rage — and expects you to figure out how they all interact. The tutorial covers basic attacks. The deeper combat — stance switching, Runic Attack timing, elemental stagger windows, and companion synergies — you learn by dying to Berserkers.

Combat fundamentals

Switch weapons constantly. The Axe does frost damage, Blades do fire damage. Enemies have elemental weaknesses and building elemental stagger fills a meter that stuns enemies for free hits. Switching between Axe and Blades mid-combo applies both elements, staggering enemies faster.

Parry timing is generous but critical. Shield parry opens enemies for massive damage. The timing window depends on which shield you use — Dauntless Shield has a tighter window but rewards perfect parries with a counterattack. Guardian Shield is more forgiving.

Runic Attacks are your burst damage. Each weapon has light and heavy Runic Attack slots. These are cooldown-based special moves. Use them at the start of every tough encounter — by the time the fight drags on, they'll be ready again.

Stagger is the hidden damage multiplier. Hit enemies with varied attacks to build stagger. When the stagger bar fills, they're stunned and you get a grab prompt (R3) for massive damage. Against mini-bosses and Berserkers, stagger management is more important than raw DPS.

Companion abilities matter. Press Square to command Atreus (or Freya later). Their attacks are free damage and can interrupt enemy moves. Use companion abilities on cooldown.

Armor and build priorities

Prioritize Runic stat early. Runic affects both Runic Attack damage and elemental status effect buildup. Higher Runic means faster staggers and harder-hitting specials.

For story difficulty: Defense and Vitality keep you alive. Stack these if you're struggling.

For Give Me No Mercy / Give Me God of War: You need damage. Strength for melee, Runic for specials, Luck for perk activation. Defense matters less because everything hits hard regardless.

Enchantments in armor slots provide significant stat boosts. Don't leave empty enchantment slots — even weak enchantments are better than nothing.

Runic Attack recommendations

Leviathan Axe Light Runic: Hel's Touch (fast, stagger-heavy) or Winter's Bite (crowd control). Both are excellent.

Leviathan Axe Heavy Runic: Breath of Thamur (massive AoE) is the best for groups. Ivaldi's Anvil is good for single targets.

Blades of Chaos Light Runic: Flames of Anguish (DoT) or Hyperion Grapple (gap closer + damage). Both strong.

Blades of Chaos Heavy Runic: Atlas Eruption (AoE ground pound) is devastating against groups.

Exploration tips

Break every pot and open every chest. Resources for upgrades are scarce early. Don't skip any loot.

Nornir Chests require solving a puzzle (usually finding three runes nearby). These contain health and rage upgrades. Do every one — the stat increases compound significantly.

Lore markers and artifacts give XP. Read everything. The XP adds up for skill tree progression.

Mystic Gateways are fast travel points. Unlock every one you find — backtracking for side content is much easier with a complete gateway network.

Favors (side quests) give the best armor and enchantments. Don't rush the main story and skip side content — the gear rewards make the endgame dramatically easier.

The endgame

Post-story content includes Berserker Gravestones (10 optional bosses), Muspelheim combat challenges, Niflheim exploration, and various Favor questlines. Berserkers are the hardest fights in the game — save them for after you have endgame gear.

The shortest version

Switch weapons mid-combo for faster elemental stagger. Parry everything — Dauntless Shield for experts, Guardian Shield for safety. Use Runic Attacks at the start of fights. Command your companion on cooldown. Prioritize Runic stat for damage builds. Do every Nornir Chest for health/rage upgrades. Don't skip Favors — they give the best gear.
