Hogwarts Legacy Tips: What the Sorting Hat Won't Tell You

Hogwarts Legacy tips for new witches and wizards — combat spells, talent priorities, exploration secrets, and the stuff the game doesn't explain.

Hogwarts Legacy is the Harry Potter open-world RPG that fans waited decades for. Avalanche Software built a genuine Hogwarts experience — attend classes, explore the castle, fly on broomsticks, fight dark wizards. The game sold over 24 million copies in its first year, making it one of the best-selling games of 2023.

The tutorial covers basic spell casting. It does not cover: which talents are traps, how the gear system actually works, which spells to prioritize learning, or why you should explore every single Merlin Trial you find. Here's what I wish I'd known.

Combat fundamentals

Spell combos are everything. The game rewards chaining spells together, not spamming one button. Basic attack (R2/RT) is your filler between cooldowns. Colored shields on enemies require matching spell colors to break — red shield needs damage spells (red category), yellow needs force spells (yellow), purple needs control spells (purple).

Protego timing matters. The shield spell blocks incoming attacks but perfect-timed Protego (casting right as the attack lands) reflects damage back. Against groups, this is your best defensive tool.

Ancient Magic meter fills from spell combos. Use varied spells to fill it faster. Ancient Magic finishers one-shot most enemies and are your answer to tanky elite enemies.

Dodge roll is better than Protego against unblockable attacks. Red-circled attacks can't be blocked. Roll through them. The i-frames are generous.

Talent priorities

You get talent points at level 5 and every level after. Not all talents are equal.

Essential early talents:

  • Spell Knowledge I, II, III (more spell slots — massive quality of life)
  • Basic Cast Mastery (faster basic attacks = faster meter fill)
  • Protego Mastery (perfect Protego stuns nearby enemies)
  • Swift (holding dodge gives a brief vanish — repositioning tool)

Strong mid-game talents:

  • Avada Kedavra Mastery (killing curse hits all cursed enemies — the most broken talent in the game)
  • Crucio Mastery (curse spreads to nearby enemies)
  • Disillusionment talents (stealth becomes viable for clearing camps)

Trap talents (don't take early):

  • Most potion and plant talents — consumables are abundant without investment
  • Nab Sack talents — creature catching is easy enough without help
  • Beast talents in general unless you love the Vivarium

Gear management

Hogwarts Legacy's gear system is its weakest design element. You'll be drowning in gear drops by hour 10.

Sell everything below your current level. There's no reason to hoard old gear. The gold is more useful.

Traits matter more than base stats. Gear with good traits (like "Ancient Magic Focus III") outperforms higher-level gear with no traits.

Transmog exists. You can change the appearance of any gear to any appearance you've collected. Wear whatever has the best stats, look however you want.

Don't bother upgrading gear until endgame. You'll replace gear so fast that upgrading mid-game is a waste of resources.

Exploration priorities

Merlin Trials expand your gear inventory. This is their only purpose and it's critical. Your gear slots fill up fast. Completing Merlin Trials is the only way to get more space. Do every one you find.

Field Guide pages are everywhere. Use Revelio constantly while exploring. Collectibles are hidden behind walls, under stairs, above doorways. Revelio highlights them all.

Demiguise Moons only appear at night. If you're hunting Demiguise Moons for Alohomora upgrades, wait until nighttime in-game. They're invisible during the day.

Astronomy Tables require nighttime too. Match the constellation pattern at night for the reward.

The house choice

Your house doesn't affect gameplay significantly. It changes your common room, some dialogue, and one exclusive quest.

Gryffindor: Classic Harry Potter experience. Richard Jackdaw's exclusive quest.

Slytherin: Best exclusive quest (Scrope's Last Hope). Unique dialogue where NPCs react to your house with suspicion.

Ravenclaw: Ollivander's exclusive quest. The common room is arguably the prettiest.

Hufflepuff: Azkaban exclusive quest — the only house that visits the prison. Many players consider this the most interesting exclusive content.

Pick whatever appeals to you. The gameplay differences are minimal.

The dark arts

Yes, you can learn Unforgivable Curses. No, there's no morality system that punishes you for using them. The game quietly ignores the ethical implications of a teenager casting Avada Kedavra on bandits.

Crucio is the best crowd control in the game when combined with its talent (curse spreads to all enemies in range).

Imperio turns enemies into allies temporarily. Useful against large groups.

Avada Kedavra is the game's best single-target damage. With the Mastery talent, it kills all cursed enemies simultaneously — making it the single most powerful ability in the game.

Learn all three. The game doesn't penalize dark magic use in any meaningful way beyond some disapproving companion dialogue.

Broom flying and mounts

Buy a broom early. The broom is your primary traversal tool. Hogsmeade has a broom shop. Spend the gold — walking everywhere is painfully slow.

Broom upgrades matter. Faster brooms from later Hogsmeade visits make exploration significantly better.

Hippogriff and Thestral mounts are available later and function similarly to brooms for overworld travel.

The Room of Requirement

This becomes your base of operations. You can:

  • Grow magical plants for combat consumables
  • Breed magical creatures for materials
  • Craft potions
  • Change your gear's appearance
  • Store collected items

Invest time in the Vivarium if you enjoy creature collection. Each rescued beast provides materials when you feed and care for them.

Endgame and post-game

The main story takes roughly 30-40 hours. Side content doubles that easily. After beating the main quest:

  • Complete all Merlin Trials
  • Finish remaining side quests
  • Collect all Field Guide pages
  • Complete all Keeper Trials
  • Hunt remaining Infamous Foes (mini-bosses in the open world)

There's no New Game+ currently. The endgame is completion-focused.

What we make at Choost

Granny's Rampage is a bullet heaven with its own spell-like upgrade system — different genre but shared "pick your build and watch it scale" satisfaction. For more open-world RPG content, the best open world rpg, games like Skyrim, and elden ring tips posts have more.

The shortest version

Prioritize spell slots and Protego talents early. Sell old gear constantly. Do Merlin Trials for inventory space. Use Revelio everywhere. Learn all three Unforgivable Curses — Avada Kedavra with its mastery talent is the strongest ability in the game. Buy a broom immediately. Pick whatever house you want — Hufflepuff has the best exclusive quest.

Hogwarts Legacy rewards exploration and experimentation. Don't rush the main story. The side content is where the game shines.
