Path of Exile 2 Best Class: Every Class Ranked for New Players

Path of Exile 2 best class — every class ranked for new players, with starter viability, endgame potential, and learning curve assessment.

Path of Exile 2 has six classes at launch, each with two ascendancy specializations. Every class can technically use any skill gem, but each has stat affinities (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence) that make certain playstyles dramatically more efficient. Here's every class ranked for new players.

The tier list (new player friendliness)

S-tier: Witch, Warrior

A-tier: Ranger, Sorceress

B-tier: Monk, Mercenary

Witch — best starter class

The Witch starts in the Intelligence area of the passive tree and excels at summoner and chaos/elemental builds.

Why she's S-tier for starters: Minion builds are the easiest way to learn PoE2. Summon zombies and spectres, let them fight while you stay safe. Gear requirements are minimal — minions scale from gem level and passive nodes, not expensive equipment. You learn game mechanics while your army handles combat.

Endgame potential: Very high. Minion builds scale into endgame. Chaos DoT builds (Essence Drain, Contagion) are also excellent on Witch.

Learning curve: Low. Summon minions, walk behind them.

Warrior — tanky and forgiving

The Warrior starts in the Strength area. Melee combat with natural tankiness.

Why he's S-tier: High base life, armor-focused defense, and slam skills that deal area damage. You take hits, you deal hits, you don't die easily. Simple and effective.

Endgame potential: High. Slam builds and bleed builds scale well. Tankiness means you survive endgame content that kills glassier classes.

Learning curve: Low-medium. Melee positioning matters but mistakes are survivable.

Ranger — fast and fragile

Dexterity-based. Bows, evasion, speed.

Why A-tier: Bow builds are strong and satisfying but evasion-based defense requires game knowledge to layer properly. New players who don't understand defense stacking die a lot.

Endgame potential: Very high. Bow builds can deal insane damage at endgame with proper investment.

Learning curve: Medium. Ranged safety helps but defense requires understanding.

Sorceress — high damage, high risk

Intelligence + Dexterity hybrid. Elemental spellcasting.

Why A-tier: Excellent AoE damage from the start. Elemental spells feel powerful immediately. But lower base life and energy shield dependency create a glassy character that punishes positioning mistakes.

Endgame potential: Very high. Some of the highest damage builds in the game.

Learning curve: Medium-high. Mana management and positioning are critical.

Monk — new class, steep curve

Dexterity + Strength hybrid. Martial arts with combo mechanics.

Why B-tier for starters: The combo system is unique and engaging but requires understanding animation canceling and attack chaining that new players won't grasp immediately. Very rewarding once mastered, frustrating while learning.

Endgame potential: High but builds are still evolving since the class is new.

Learning curve: High. Combo mastery takes significant practice.

Mercenary — new class, unique weapons

Strength + Intelligence hybrid. Crossbow and grenade-focused.

Why B-tier: Crossbow mechanics are new and don't have extensive community build guides yet. The class works but optimization paths are less established than traditional classes.

Endgame potential: Unknown ceiling. Community is still exploring.

Learning curve: Medium-high. Unique weapons require learning new mechanics.

Universal class tips

Start with a build guide. PoE2's complexity means blind first characters often fail. Follow a proven guide for your first character, then experiment on your second.

Every class can respec. Regret orbs refund passive points. Don't stress about "perfect" builds — you can fix mistakes.

Ascendancy choice matters more than base class. Each class has two ascendancy options that fundamentally change your playstyle. Research both before committing.

What we make at Choost

Granny's Rampage has simpler class choices — weapon selection defines your build. Same "pick your path" satisfaction at smaller scale. For more PoE2 content, the path of exile 2 builds, games like Path of Exile 2, and path of exile vs diablo 4 posts have more.

The shortest version

Best starter: Witch (minion build — easy, safe, scales well). Runner-up: Warrior (tanky, simple, forgiving). Best damage: Sorceress or Ranger (glass cannon territory). Most unique: Monk (combo system, steep learning curve). Newest: Mercenary (crossbows, community still figuring it out). Follow a build guide for your first character. Respec exists — mistakes are fixable.
