Terraria Best Weapons: The Arsenal That Carries Each Game Phase

Terraria best weapons by class and progression phase — the swords, bows, spells, and summons worth crafting at every stage of the game.

Terraria has over 500 weapons. Most are stepping stones you use for an hour before crafting something better. A few define entire progression phases and carry you through multiple bosses. Here's what's actually worth your crafting materials, organized by class and game phase.

Pre-Hardmode weapons

Melee:

  • Night's Edge (crafted from four biome swords) — the pre-Hardmode melee king. Combines Blade of Grass, Muramasa, Blood Butcherer/Light's Bane, and Volcano. Strong enough to carry through Wall of Flesh.
  • Starfury — drops from Sky Islands. Summons stars on swing. Excellent early-mid game.

Ranged:

  • Minishark — bought from Arms Dealer for 35 gold. Rapid-fire gun with high DPS. The classic pre-Hardmode ranged weapon.
  • Molten Fury — Hellstone bow. Converts wooden arrows to flaming arrows. Good boss killer.
  • Phoenix Blaster — Space Gun + Handgun crafted at Iron Anvil. Strong single-target damage.

Magic:

  • Space Gun + Meteor Armor — free infinite casting with the armor set bonus. The easiest pre-Hardmode magic build.
  • Water Bolt — found in Dungeon bookshelves. Piercing bouncing bolt that clears rooms.
  • Demon Scythe — drops from Demons in the Underworld. Piercing scythe projectile.

Summoner:

  • Imp Staff — crafted from Hellstone. Best pre-Hardmode summon.
  • Snapthorn — crafted from Jungle materials. Good whip for summoner damage.

Early Hardmode weapons

Melee:

  • Amarok — yoyo that drops in Snow biome during Hardmode. Yoyos are underrated in Terraria — they have excellent DPS and safe range.
  • Dao of Pow — crafted from Light + Dark Shards. Flail with confusion effect.

Ranged:

  • Daedalus Stormbow — drops from Hallowed Mimics. Combined with Holy Arrows, this is the most broken weapon in early Hardmode. Rains arrows from the sky. Destroys The Destroyer in seconds.
  • Onyx Blaster — crafted from Dark Shard + Shotgun. Excellent crowd control.

Magic:

  • Crystal Serpent — fishing in the Hallow. Burst projectile with solid damage.
  • Sky Fracture — crafted from Magic Missile + Light Shards. Fast, piercing, reliable.

Summoner:

  • Blade Staff — drops from Queen Slime. Fast-attacking summon with armor-piercing.
  • Cool Whip — crafted from Frost Core. Good AoE whip.

Post-Plantera weapons

Melee:

  • Terra Blade — crafted from True Night's Edge + True Excalibur. Iconic Terraria weapon. Fires sword projectiles with every swing. Remains relevant into endgame.
  • Possessed Hatchet — drops from Golem. Homing projectile that returns to you. Incredibly reliable.

Ranged:

  • Megashark — crafted from Minishark + Shark Fin + Illegal Gun Parts. The definitive Hardmode ranged weapon. Pair with Chlorophyte or Ichor bullets.
  • Tactical Shotgun — drops from Tactical Skeleton in post-Plantera Dungeon. Devastating at close range.

Magic:

  • Razorpine — drops from Everscream (Frost Moon event). Rapid-fire magic needles with extreme DPS.
  • Blizzard Staff — drops from Ice Queen (Frost Moon). Rains ice shards from the sky.

Summoner:

  • Xeno Staff — drops from Martian Saucer. UFO summons with excellent tracking.
  • Terraprisma — drops from Empress of Light (daytime kill only). The best summon weapon in the game but requires killing the hardest fight in the game in specific conditions.

Endgame weapons (post-Moon Lord)

Melee: Meowmere (bouncing cat projectile), Star Wrath (raining stars). Both drop from Moon Lord.

Ranged: S.D.M.G. (Space Dolphin Machine Gun). Yes, really. Moon Lord drop. Highest ranged DPS in the game.

Magic: Last Prism — Moon Lord drop. Channeled rainbow beam. Highest sustained magic DPS but eats mana fast.

Summoner: Stardust Dragon Staff — crafted from Stardust Fragments. Dragon summon that grows with each summon slot.

Universal weapon tips

Reforge everything at the Goblin Tinkerer. Legendary (melee), Unreal (ranged), Mythical (magic), Ruthless (summon) are the best modifiers for each class. Reforging costs gold but the damage increase is massive.

Ammo matters for ranged. Chlorophyte Bullets home in on enemies. Ichor Bullets reduce defense. Crystal Bullets shatter for extra hits. Don't use Musket Balls when better ammo exists.

Accessories boost damage more than weapons sometimes. Fire Gauntlet, Warrior Emblem, Avenger Emblem — stacking damage accessories multiplies weapon effectiveness.

What we make at Choost

Granny's Rampage has its own weapon progression — minigun to chainsword to flamethrower through boss kills. Different scale but shared "each weapon fundamentally changes how you play."

The shortest version

Pre-Hardmode: Night's Edge (melee), Minishark (ranged), Space Gun + Meteor Armor (magic), Imp Staff (summoner).

Early Hardmode: Amarok (melee), Daedalus Stormbow + Holy Arrows (ranged — most broken weapon in the game at this phase).

Post-Plantera: Terra Blade (melee), Megashark (ranged), Razorpine (magic), Xeno Staff (summoner).

Endgame: Meowmere, S.D.M.G., Last Prism, Terraprisma.

Reforge everything. Use the right ammo. Stack damage accessories. The difference between an unreforged weapon and a Legendary one is 15-20% damage — that's often the margin between killing a boss and dying to it.
